Asylum Haunted Scream Park offers 5 very different haunted experiences - Darkness Falls, Zombie City, Xterminate Mutant Attack, Zombie Hunting, and the Carnivale of Lost Souls. We only experienced 2.5 out of the 5.
Darkness Falls is a mile long haunted trail through the woods with various indoor sets along the way. There was no sensible progression, flow, or story being told. Despite several really interesting scenes, overall this attraction sucked. We’re sorry to say it, but it’s true! Characters, sets, and props were just disparately thrown together in weird and sloppy mash-ups. Costumes and make-up were NOT hitting, It looked like everyone got in the mirror 10 minutes before opening and did their own thing. No scares, not just a few, NONE! Dr. Mortis is the one who sent us out into the woods but somewhere the story got lost.
Zombie City had a completely different feel. This was a fully immersive, interactive haunt where our group was trying to escape a city that had been overrun by zombies and a dangerous militant faction named SCUZ. We navigated our way through assorted scenes with the help of a guide, meeting all types of odd characters like a weird religious cult and a guy that carried a rubber chicken attached to a plunger and stuck it to his belly. Rubber chicken guy would have been some awesome, clutch comic relief if we had actually been super scared before getting to him! We REALLY wanted to like this one, but everything felt drawn out due to the lack of actual scares and quality set design. We just couldn’t fully buy into the story. The actors did the best they could with what they were given and were very enthusiastic, but also lacked decent costuming and make-up. This was a bummer...
Xterminate Mutant Attack is a laser shoot. We bought tickets for this attraction as well but after wasting almost 2 hours between the slow moving line at Darkness Falls, going on that mile long hike (at least we got some exercise), and then escaping Zombie City which took about half an hour, we decided to cut our losses. We ended up giving those tickets away to some guys in the line at the Haunted Hotel.
Zombie Hunting is a paintball shoot. We’ve done our fair share of these and are never impressed. Asylum’s version offered nothing new so we decided to forego this attraction. Not our thing, but if you enjoy them… GO FOR IT!
Wondering where that 0.5 mentioned at the beginning came from? This is it...The Carnivale of Lost Souls is basically the whole area outside of the actual attractions. It’s a free family-friendly midway that features live entertainment, games, food and drinks, and specialty vendors and artists. About halfway through our wait at Darkness Falls, a fire performer came to entertain us in line. We LOVE features and areas like this and wish more haunts had them. Halloween/fall is our favorite, so it’s nice to have a place to chill, take in the haunt vibes, and enjoy the season. We were just in such a rush to get to the next scheduled haunt we didn’t get a chance to really appreciate this area or grab the BBQ. It smelled delicious.
The owners of Asylum have teamed up with the owners of the previous 7th Street Haunt to create a new haunted attraction called American Horrorplex. This was also on our tour list, but unfortunately we ran out of time. We’re sure a lot of energy was diverted to this new haunt being it’s the first year… maybe taking away from here?
If you are looking for a full night of the Halloween experience and entertainment in one spot this is your place, just don’t expect to be scared. Hopefully, in the years to come the “scream” will be put back into Asylum Haunted Scream Park!
